my creative space: wool before & after

It's taking me a while to get back into creative mode.. my brain is still on holiday... but I'm getting there slowly! I had the urge to do some dying! My gorgeous grandma sent me loads of wool last year when she found out I was getting into knitting and crochet.. love her! There were 6 balls of a terracotta colour which is not really my colour so I thought I would have a go at dying them!

I used iDye and mixed the colour gunmetal and half a packet of navy together to make a grey blue.

I prepared the wool by winding into a loops and tying them up, then placed them in the dye bath and gently move them around... I was so worried they were going to get into one gigantic tangled knot! I used boiling water and I think the wool has shrunk a bit but not too bad! I also went a bit crazy and rummaged around my wardrobe to see what I could re-dyed... just couldn't help myself :)

I had no idea what colour the wool was going to turn out like... I was thinking I might have gone a brown but to my amazement it went this gorgeous deep aubergine.. I am SO pleased!

Hmmm... now what can I make with 6 balls of aubergine wool..?

Hope you are having a great creative week!

  2. Dying wool - wow! Love the resulting colours - it's such a pretty shade, and I can imagine, quite unique. Maybe a winter beanie with an over-sized crochet flower? Or a knitted bag? xx

  3. Wow! That is really inspiring. Never thought that I could dye wool which is already dyed. Clever! Amazing! Have to do this with lots of old wool I got from my mum.

  4. That's a great color! I've only ever dyed yarn with Kool Aid, with my kids--which was also fun. :-)

  5. Happy New Year Lamina! Hope you had lots of fun during the holidays.

Your grandma is sweet. I'm glad you found such a clever way to be able to use the yarn. The colour turned out beautiful. And I second Christina, it would look good as a cowl.

I've dyed wool before with koolaid, but even then only white wool. Will keep this trick in mind.

  11. Oh YUMMMM!!! What an amazing transformation. How about a shrug, or a blanket (but you'll have to use other yarn too). Looking forward to whatever you do with it! :)

  14. The aubergine color looks absolutely lovely. And it seems t me like your definitely in the creative flow already :D It's so fun to see how the seasons are moving towards "fall" over there, and spring over here.

Maybe a little poncho-like thing would look nice in that color, but I'm not sure how to crochet that. These days I'm very in to the idea of knitting Norwegian mittens, just like these.

Btw: I'm really excited that you opened your own photo blog :D
