I have been cruising around lots of creative blogs, looking for inspiration and motivation when I bumped into this!
Very interesting! I think.... it's motivating (?) or it could be a bit depressing, if you look at in another way? (oh dear... I have so much work to do!) But I suppose it's good to know that others go through the same thing too! And it's ok to have high expectations and a vision of the work that you want to create and make! Hmmm... well I better get on with it... I have a huge volume of work to do if I want to get anywhere! :)
Where do you find motivation and inspiration when the going gets tough? I would love to hear any ideas!
Hope you are having an inspiring week so far!
Right now I'm just in the same situation as you. I so BADLY want to start doing something, yet I have so many other things to get done (related to my studies) that I don't know where to fit in that little creative time. But I know I have to! Because just as Ira Glass says: you have to do tremendous amounts of work before it lives up to your ambitions. Which is relaxing to me, because I know that I can't let my expectations ruin me, but that they still have to inspire me to do better :D
ReplyDeleteI agree that it's important not to let expectations ruin one's ambitions... everything thing you do helps the end result you want to achieve :)
DeleteHope you get to squeeze a little bit of creative time in!
Oh oh my computer keeps crashing every time I try to watch Ira Glass' video or any videos for that matter (might be time for a new computer) but I'll just answer your question anyway. I quite often switch from one mode of creativity to another and it helps. Slowly but surely. When I get overwhelmed with all the craft I want to do and somehow freeze I start cooking more or reading more (I count these as creative activities too). Or I happen to see many plays in a short period of time or study a language new to me(happens very rarely). Sometimes this happens without me acknowledging it first. Nowadays I'm better at recognizing or anticipating these shifts. I just have to learn not to get too upset about it. That it's okay not to sew/knit/crochet etc. for a while if I feel like doing something different and the same goes to cooking etc. I hope this odd answer made sense. I guess I just like to see many things as outlets of creativity.
ReplyDeleteBut at the moment I can't get anything done due to little bears erratic sleeping habits. But I'm trying to find a little time and a little motivation when I can. Even if it at the moment only means a few embroidery stitches a week.
And I hope the slump goes away for you soon.
Thanks Martta! It's good to have different creative outlets to keep you motivated... I do too! It can be a bit overwhelming wanting to do too much but then it's also good to do something different and have a break or not do much at all!
DeleteHope little bears sleep habits improve soon :)
Maya Made had a post on this recently, with more ideas in the comments: http://www.mayamade.blogspot.com/2012/01/how-to-find-your-makin-mojo.html
ReplyDeleteNot *exactly* what you're asking, maybe? But maybe close?
Right now I'm trying to ignore most of my ideas and focus. I have a notebook and I write ideas down but I'm trying to finish my embroidered trees--almost there--thinking on how to take that idea in a different direction--when I feel overwhelmed by ideas and not sure where to start having that notebook helps. Focusing is one of the things I'm working on. :)
Thanks Amy! I admit I have been doing a fair amount of scribbling/doodling in my sketch book and on scraps of paper all over the house... the scribbles look a bit like whats going on in my brain... quite messy! I think you are right with the idea of just concerntrating on one thing and let all the other ideas pile on in the sketch book :)
Deleteyou know, I pile up all those sketches and plug away at them methodically (almost) until that day when i'm seized by white-hot inspiration for something. then I put everything down and focus on just that. when that's done I go back to my pile of sketches, getting them cut/sewn/baked/painted/embroidered/paper-mache'd/whatever....until the next moment of inspiration arrives~!
ReplyDeleteThat definately sounds like a good plan to me to let it all just sit on simmer for a bit until the next spark of inspiration happens :)

THank you.. there are some really lovely blogs there :)
DeleteI enjoyed this video and though I agree with it I also think its so important to train yourself to not keep judging your creative work; just let it out....good, bad, ugly stop judging it from a commercial angle or comparing it to anyone else's work; just enjoy and make and then make some more :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Amy! I agree ... one must embrace the good, bad and ugly :)
DeleteThanks Lamina, this was good to watch today - i always seem to hit a slump in these first two months of a new year. All you need is a little pick me up, a comment or a positive meeting/conversation that gets you going again....x
ReplyDeleteSo true .... thanks Louise :)
